Well...last night I went to my first rodeo and really liked it. It was in a town about 30 miles west of here named Sinton. It was in a large covered stadium with a dirt ring the center. Good thing it was covered cause we did have about a 10 minute rain event during the main event! It was a bit chilly for here...in the 50's I would say. At first we felt funny not having on cowboy hats and boots...but when we actually got in there, we found that a good 50% of the people did not have them on either. The kids who did though were really, really cute...esp the little girls!
The whole thing lasted about 3 hours and included calf and steer roping, bucking bronco riding and bull riding, and cowgirls doing barrel racing. The cowgirl pics did not turn out at all...they were simply blurs. Our camera does not stop action! The other pics are just OK....very hard to get them...but fun to watch. I was worried that I would feel for the animals too much to enjoy it...but they treated the animals very well. They even prayed for them as well as the cowboys before the rodeo. This is Texas and they seem to pray a lot! The horses were sooo beautiful! What glorious animals and how highly skilled they were. And the guys who rode the bucking broncos were simply spineless...in their flexibility I mean...not in their bravery! I did feel a bit for the bulls....after the guys fell off...they sometimes would not leave the ring and the two cowboys who were "pick up men" (and not in the Brokeback Mtn sense...as the comedian cowboys kept saying) had to rope them and then kind of half drag them off. The other steers and calves, after they got unroped, seemed to know exactly where to go to get out of the ring...they had done this before for sure!
The only thing I didn't like was the so called comic banter between the MC guy and one of the clowns...it was corny, stupid humor for the most part...but they had to fill the space between the times the cowboys got situated on the horses or whatever and were ready to come out. It was fun...hope the pics do it some justice!

I wish I could have gone with you! Dad used to take us boys to the arena when they would have them. Late at nite I'll still watch the bull riding (after Natalie has fallen asleep!) I think it's one of the greatest sports around! I'm glad you got to go! -David
