Mike's thoughts-Remembering Texas

I fondly remember Texas from my formative years. To me Texas was Tom Mix, Red Ryder, Rex Allen, the singing cowboy, Roy, Gene, Dale, Gabby, Trigger, Rin-Tin-Tin, wagon trains, cattle drives, rustling, slapping leather, gunfights, fast draws, Indians, feathers, arrows, pow wows, distant drums, smoke signals, and circling the wagons. There was Hopalong Cassidy, his sidekick Fuzzy, The Lone Ranger and Tonto ("What you mean' We' Paleface"), the toothless Gabby Hayes ("You low down, dirty, double dealin', cattle rustlin', chicken bitin', womanizin', slithery snake"). How many times have you heard "Draw you dirty rat or get out of my saloon"?

I used to watch Paladin (Have Gun Will Travel), Matt, Kitty, Doc and Festus in Gunsmoke, never missed Bat Masterson with Gene Barry, Cheyenne and Clint Walker, The Rebel with Nick Adams and The Adventures of Johnny Ringo. There were many more, too.

Now here in Texas is the true adventures of the Alamo, with Sam Houston, Jim Bowie, Col. William Travis, David Crockett, and about 200 other souls who really did give their lives for the liberty of Texas. General Lopez de Santa Ana is still not a popular character here. We have this beautiful coast and all its yachts and winter residences, the beautiful flowers (bluebonnets, Indian Paint Brush, azaleas, bougainvillea, and more, thanks to a certain Lady Bird. There is great Tex-Mex food, BBQ second to none, and seafood rivalling Florida. Judy and I are on a seafood diet, by the way, we only eat when we see food.

  2. My introduction to Roy and Dale and Trigger was Sylvia Thomas, who when she was about 7 or 8, was the most coybow crazy kid you could meet. She wore the cowboy hat and boots too.
